Celebrating a Life Well Lived (Glenwell)

July 18, 2018 (Cheektowaga, NY) ─ Hard work, family and faith have made the first 100 years fly by for Jennie Altes.

Jennie Altes Glenwell Centenarian

A resident at Glenwell, a DePaul Senior Living Community in Cheektowaga, Altes is pictured above holding a photo of herself from her graduation from Springville High School and at her birthday party at Glenwell where she received flowers, a cake and a card signed by all residents! She celebrated her actual birthday on July 15 by attending her church in Hamburg followed by a lunch with friends and family.

Altes spent her youth working on her family’s farm and playing in the streams nearby in Springville in the Southtowns of Buffalo. As an adult she worked at a pharmacy and managing a bank in Hamburg.

“I’m very proud that I’ve always worked and that I was able to complete my education,” she said.

Altes’ husband passed away nearly 50 years ago. She’s stayed busy volunteering, attending church, sewing, doing needlepoint and traveling extensively throughout the United States and in Europe. She even drove cross-country to Wisconsin in her 80s!

“Jennie is a quiet, caring sort,” said Activities Director Scott Wieser. “She is very sweet and considerate. She takes pride in her appearance and is very proud of her volunteer work. She attributes her longevity to keeping her busy.”
