Walking for Charity (Westwood Commons)

August 29, 2014 (North Chili, NY) ─ Pink balloons drifted from the hands of Westwood Commons residents and towards the sky in a show of support for breast cancer survivors. After the balloon release, seniors set off on Westwood Commons’ Eighth Annual Walk for Charity. This year’s walk raised $305 for the Breast Cancer Coalition.

Westwood Commons residents Betty Kates, Helen Jakabowski, Robert Holdridge, Frank Ruggerio, Marion Schmeer participate in the DePaul Senior Living Community’s Eighth Annual Walk for Charity.

Activities Director Cathy Toney said this year’s charity hits close to home, as Jill Taylor, a nurse practitioner who serves Westwood Commons, is an over 10 year survivor of breast cancer, and many residents know friends and family members who have battled the disease.

“We try to pick a cause that connects with us in some kind of way,” said Toney.

Despite cooler temperatures, Toney said over 30 residents participated in the annual Walk for Charity.

Past recipients of past Westwood Commons’ charity walks have included the Flower City Habitat for Humanity, Chili Volunteer Ambulance Service, Aurora House, the Chili Fire Department, the Al Sigl Center, the Chili Rotary Club’s wheelchair fund, and a local food shelf.
