September 29, 2014 (Henrietta, NY) ─ Stepping foot onto the Greater Rochester International Airport’s 1,100 acre campus, Woodcrest Commons residents embarked upon one of the most interesting adventures they’ve ever experienced. And it all took place without even leaving the ground.

Pictured here, Woodcrest Commons residents Alma Coles, Joanne Hackett and Barb Frielinghaus enjoy an up close and personal tour of the Greater Rochester International Airport. At the Army National Guard Aviation Unit, residents took turns sitting in the cockpit of “Baby Bird,” a Black Hawk Helicopter for which each blade costs $350,000. Residents also toured a Chinook helicopter called “Big Bird” which can carry 33 people. The Chinook’s engines cost $1.5 million each and the engine can run on any flammable material.

In addition, residents visited the Airport’s fire department and spent some time on the runway in a bus watching planes land and take off. During a visit to the security and communications area, residents checked out the over one hundred and fifty cameras on site. The tour also included a stop at the baggage area and a meet-and-greet with Saavy, a K-9 trained to sniff explosives.

“Our tour guide enjoyed us so much and spent an extra two hours with us,” said Lown. “It was so much fun!”
