The Power of a Child’s Smile (Pee Dee Gardens)

August 29, 2018 (Florence, SC) ─ “If we could see the world through the eyes of a child, we would see the magic in everything.” Residents at Pee Dee Gardens, a DePaul Senior Living Community in Florence have been having a ball forming intergenerational friendships with children from Charlie Brown’s Preschool.

Whether it’s Easter, Christmas or “just because,” residents always look forward to the children’s visits.

“Residents love having them,” said Activities Director Sarah Gerula. “They really engage and interact with each other so well. Everyone is happy and wears big grins on their faces during the visits.”

Pictured clockwise above with children from Charlie Brown Preschool are residents Jackie Singletary, Ophelia Douglas, Clyde Brigman and Ruth Fagan. Children and seniors played games, read books, sang songs, completed puzzles and shared snacks with one another.

“It seems that the simple idea of bringing old and young together can bring energy, knowledge and happiness to each other’s lives,” said Charlie Brown Daycare and Preschool owner and co-director Melinda Fowler. “It is a great opportunity for the children to serve and realize how much they can uplift others.”

Fowler said it can also help the children learn to be more comfortable with their elders.

“The visits teach so many valuable lessons, including providing an opportunity to learn a new skill, give a sense of purpose and help reduce isolation of the elderly,” she said. “Our students and families are all happy for the experiences we have had at Pee Dee Gardens and we hope to continue visiting and bringing smiles to all our faces.”
