Celebrating a Century of Giving Back at Wheatfield Commons

March 23, 2020  (North Tonawanda, NY) ─ Time flies when you’re giving back! Lenore “Nonnie” Carroll celebrated a long list of accomplishments and her 100th birthday recently! Her secret to longevity is to “be kind to her neighbor.” A resident of Wheatfield Commons, a DePaul Senior Living Community in North Tonawanda, Nonnie has spent a century practicing what she preaches.

Nonnie 100th Birthday

Born on March 17, 1920 in Nova Scotia, Nonnie attended Provincial Normal College where she paid $50 for the whole year! After college, she worked as a teller at a military bank where she met her future husband Hank Carroll, an active duty military man.

The two married in August 1945 in Brantford, Ontario. Over the years, the couple resided in Ontario, Schenectady, Memphis, Oklahoma, Florida and finally Grand Island in 1978 where Nonnie was very active in her community and church.

Among her many involvements, Nonnie served as president of the Altar Society at St. Stephen’s Church where she organized the first blood clinic and assisted with flu shot clinics. Nonnie and Hank were both members of the Grand Island Historical Society and assisted in preparing floats for the annual fourth of July parade and with the fourth grade “Tour of Grand Island and River Lea” for many years. The two delivered for Meals on Wheels and organized endless basket raffles and other fundraisers for the multitude of organizations with which they were affiliated. Nonnie also organized a group twice a year to assist the town clerk in preparing tax bills for mailing. It comes as no surprise that Nonnie was named Citizen of the Year for Volunteer Services in 2013, one of her proudest accomplishments.

Hank and Nonnie have three children, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren with two more on the way. Nonnie’s hobbies are playing solitaire on her iPad, playing bingo and keeping up on the news. A cancer survivor, Nonnie said she is surprised to be turning 100 and is proud to call Wheatfield Commons home!
